Inquest Services – How I Help

Losing someone close to you is devastating. An Inquest can feel unfamiliar, formal and overwhelming at a time when things are already very difficult.

My role is to guide you through the process with clarity, care and firm legal expertise. I am a qualified Barrister and represent families at inquests across England and Wales, ensuring that the right questions are asked and that the investigation is thorough, fair and legally sound.

An Inquest is a public investigation, conducted by a Coroner to determine who has died, and how, when and where they came by their death. In some cases – particularly where the State may have been involved – the scope can be wider.

Whatever the circumstances, I work to ensure your family’s voice is properly heard.

Explaining the Process

At the outset, I will explain clearly:

  • What an Inquest is (and what it is not)
  • Whether the case may engage Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights
  • What issues are likely to be investigated
  • What outcomes are legally available to the Coroner

Understanding the process often reduces anxiety and allows families to feel more prepared.

Preparing the Evidence

Careful preparation is essential. I assist with:

  • Reviewing disclosure and identifying gaps
  • Reviewing witness statements
  • Identifying further lines of inquiry
  • Ensuring relevant documents are obtained

The right preparation can significantly affect the scope, effectiveness and outcomes of the Inquest.

Working with Other Interested Persons

In many Inquests there will be other Interested Persons, such as NHS Trusts, care providers, prisons, police forces or government bodies. I can help you to:

  • Engage constructively with their legal representatives
  • Identify areas of agreement and dispute
  • Ensure your family’s position is clearly and firmly and properly advanced

Pre-Inquest Reviews

Pre-Inquest Reviews (PIRs) are crucial hearings where the coroner determines scope, witnesses, disclosure and whether Article 2 is engaged.

I provide:

  • Representation at PIR hearings
  • Written submissions on legal issues
  • Advocacy on scope, witnesses and jury requirements
  • Clear advice to you following each hearing

Early strategic decisions can shape the entire inquest.

Preparing for the Hearing

Many families are understandably anxious about attending an Inquest, which can be daunting. I will:

  • Help you understand what will happen on the day
  • Offer guidance, if you are giving evidence
  • Discuss the likely witnesses and issues
  • Ensure you feel confident and supported

Examination of Witnesses

At the Inquest hearing, I will:

  • Prepare detailed questions for witnesses
  • Examine witnesses carefully and respectfully
  • Ensure important issues are fully explored
  • Clarify technical or medical evidence

My approach is firm but measured, always mindful of the sensitivity of the process.

Legal Submissions and Advocacy

I provide full advocacy throughout the inquest, including:

  • Addressing the Coroner on points of law
  • Making submissions on the scope of findings
  • Assisting the Coroner with complex factual or legal issues
  • Making submissions on conclusions

In appropriate cases, this includes detailed submissions concerning Article 2 inquests and the wider investigative duty.

Explaining the Coroner’s Conclusions

At the conclusion of the inquest, I will explain:

  • The meaning of the Coroner’s findings
  • The different possible short-form conclusions (such as accident, suicide, unlawful killing, neglect, or narrative conclusions)
  • What those findings mean in practical and legal terms

Understanding the outcome is often essential for families seeking closure.

Preventing Future Deaths

Where appropriate, I will make submissions inviting the Coroner to consider issuing a Prevention of Future Deaths report to help ensure lessons are properly learned and fewer familie suffer in the future.

Advice on Further Steps

An Inquest can sometimes give rise to other legal issues. I can advise you on:

  • The potential for civil claims arising from the death
  • The implications of the Inquest findings
  • Any next steps that may be available

Legal Aid and Funding

I advise families on eligibility for Legal Aid, including Exceptional Case Funding where applicable, and can assist with the application process.

A Calm and Careful Approach

Every Inquest is different. Some are short and focused. Others are complex, lengthy and involve multiple public bodies. My aim is always the same:

To ensure that the investigation is thorough, legally robust, and conducted with proper respect for your family and the person who has died.
